The Voyage of the Mir El Lah (1989)

(The film begins at about 2:30)

Produced, directed and written by John Heminway, this is a fantastic and rare film about the last voyage of the fabled ocean-going wooden sailing dhows of the Indian Ocean that boasted sails made entirely out of reed matting.

Includes Italian adventurer Lorenzo Ricciardi and his wife Mirella, Kenyan photographer and author of the international bestseller Vanishing Africa (and still alive in her 90’s!). The film is narrated by Kenneth More and Mirella Ricciardi.

I just received my copy of the book (sans dust jacket) and am pleased to have it. (more coming soon)

Mirella has authored Vanishing Africa, African Saga, Voyage of the Mir-el-lah, Vanishing Amazon, African Rainbow and most recently, African Visions.
