First Contact With the Toulambi (1993)

An absolutely fascinating documentary of Belgian filmmaker Jean-Pierre Dutilleux making first contact with the Toulambi tribe of Papua New Guinea who had, up until this time, heard legends of the existence of white men but either didn’t believe it or believed that white men were the spirits of dead ancestors coming back to haunt the living.

The Toulambi are associated with the Angu or Änga people, also called Kukukuku, who live in the southwest of PNG.

There is plenty of conjecture that this video is faked. If that’s the case, it’s the best acting I’ve ever seen. According to Wikipedia “It has been accused of being staged by anthropologist Pierre Lemonnier, who claims a first-hand relationship with the tribe.[9] Lemonnier, however, was sued for defamation and lost the case.”

Original video edited by Miri was titled “The most primitive tribe of the planet: The Toulambi”.

An interesting associated read would be J. K. McCarthy‘s rare 1963 book Patrol into Yesterday: My New Guinea Years. I have just ordered a copy from Australia and will update this section soon.
